Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend a concert given by Kenan Adnawi, an oudist from Syria, and Tareq Rantisi, a percussionist from Palestine. This turned out to be one of the highlights of my semester so far. Of course, everything is better with language – and this was no exception, as the musicians spoke with us in Arabic before an English-language workshop.
I have very little musical training, except for some piano lessons when I was younger. I enjoyed learning about the different instruments and learning a little about how diverse music can be. Even despite my lack of knowledge, it was clear that the musicians were excellent. The songs, many of which had been composed by Kenan Adnawi, were absolutely beautiful.
In the past I have mostly explored foreign music to accompany my language learning. As for instrumental music, I am really only familiar with some classical music. This concert made it clear that there is much more variation in instrumental music than I was previously aware.
