Now that I re-figured out how to access my blog – it was a long break – I am delighted to announce that I was accepted into the Arabic Flagship Program! In case you aren’t familiar with it, OU’s flagship is one of four in the United States, all of which aim to bring their students to professional fluency after five years. The program includes multiple language and culture clubs, a language partner, and two intensive study programs. I hope to spend a summer in Meknes, Morocco. I recently learned that by my capstone year the program will almost certainly have moved back to Alexandria, Egypt. How cool is that? During the capstone year, I will take language courses, content courses in Arabic, and pursue an internship.
For now though, I’m still at the beginner stage. I’ve jumped into clubs, which will be the subject of a future post, and had the first couple of meetings with my language partner, Lamis. Lamis is great, and has already taught me how to talk about allergies, so that I can avoid eating الفول السوداني, aka peanuts or Sudanese beans. لما باكل الفل السوداني مش بعرف اتنفس. So far, this semester is off to a good start.
