How do you hope to incorporate your experiences as a Global Engagement Fellow into your future career? How much of an impact do you think it will make? What will you do to maximize its impact?
This question really made me stop and think, especially coming right after a class on resumes and other career-related information. Of course, that is the point of these reflections.
I think the reason this question caught me off guard is because I haven’t actually thought much about a career. That statement is probably misleading, so let me rephrase: even though I’ve known my interests, goals, and “what I want to be when I grow up” for years, I haven’t really thought about what I need to do to make that a career, with a resume and interviews and maybe even a suit. At this point, being a Global Engagement Fellow has already impacted my career by making me think about it.
So how will being a Global Engagement Fellow impact my ability to work as a linguist, ideally in the field of language documentation and revitalization? The answer, once I get past the initial “I don’t know”, is that I hope my time in the Global Engagement Fellowship will allow me to
- Improve my language capabilities through spending time in countries where the language is spoken,
- Increase my ability to manoeuver in different cultures, and
- Enable me to work in different areas of the world, both ones that I will have traveled to and others, by broadening my linguistic and cultural perspective.
From a resume-building point of view, I hope that these experiences will show future schools and employers the skills I have gained as well as my potential to keep learning languages and to adapt to new people and new situations. With that in mind, I will attempt to think along the way about how the experiences I am having could be quantified. Just saying, well, I’d been studying Dutch, and I really wanted to use it and visit lots of art museums is probably not quite the thing to say on a resume, even if it’s completely true. I have a lot to work on, but thankfully I have support here to help me along the right track to transform my passions into an actual career.
